Your home IP changes.
Your hostname does not.
legitdns is free dynamic DNS for Raspberry Pi boards and home servers. Pick a name, point it at your home connection, and it stays pointed there - even when your IP changes.
# update the hostname - legitdns uses the address you connect from $ curl -u "speedracer.rpi0.org:<token>" "https://legitdns.com/nic/update?hostname=speedracer.rpi0.org" good 192.0.2.44 # check the answer $ dig +short speedracer.rpi0.org 192.0.2.44 # on IPv6 the same idea: dig +short AAAA speedracer.rpi0.org
Set it up once with ddclient, inadyn, or your router. Then forget it.
One token per hostname
Every hostname gets its own update token. Revoke the token for one device and the rest keep working. No shared account password on your router.
IPv4 and IPv6, both first-class
A and AAAA records from day one, updated together. If your connection has IPv6, your hostname answers on it.
Every update, on the record
See when each hostname last updated, from where, and what it changed from and to. Works with ddclient, inadyn, router DynDNS, or a plain API call.
why a home domain?
Every name lives under a domain like rpi5.com or pibase.net - pick yours. A few of the reasons people do:
Raspberry Pi
Reach your Pi from anywhere, by name.
Home server
One steady address for the whole house.
NAS
Backups and photo archives, always findable.
Home Assistant
Lights and locks, reachable from anywhere.
Media server
Stream your library from any couch, anywhere.
Game server
Friends join by name, not by IP.
